Last 5 November Birba was presented with the R Ecoembes Award in the Best Business Measure Category.
It was the third time the event has been held. Ecoembes is a non-profit that cares for the environment and promotes sustainability through recycling packaging. The R Awards recognise innovative initiatives which take care of our environment by improving, promoting and publicising recycling.
This time round there were 137 nominations for the ‘R Awards’ in their five categories. The Best Business Measure went to Galetes Camprodon for implementing an ecodesign measure designed to make its packaging more sustainable and thus reduce its environmental footprint.
The measure consists of modifying the BIRBA Biscuit Assortment cardboard container and has involved firstly decreasing the cardboard grammage and secondly completely getting rid the PVC plastic shrink wrap. Previously the container was a nestable ‘shoe-type’ box closed with shrink wrap while now it is closed by side gluing. As a result the container is 23.57% lighter and its CO2 footprint is up to 15% less.
Ecoembes has thus recognised Birba’s commitment to the environment and at Birba we remain true to our commitment to be as natural as possible in everything we do.
